Nothing beats enjoying hours in the great outdoors. If you’re anything like me, the more time I spend in the woods, the more I want to. However, to make the most out of it, you’ll need to bring some necessary items with you.
Just the necessities – everything you want and nothing you do not. That’s where a good multi-tool will come in handy. But choosing the right one is important, as there are thousands of various options in the market.
Before we start, let me tell you that there is no single best camping multi-tool for all. It depends mostly on your priorities. Well, let’s not make you any more confused. Check out this checklist below to help yourself decide which multi-tool would be your best camping companion before you look for “ultra-lightweight sleeping bag”.
Is this multi-tool only for camping, or can it be used in other situations?
Maybe you’re not a Multi-Tool MacGyver-like me, and you just want to use this multi-tool when camping. If this is the case, the right multi-tool for you would include more suitable tools for camping. A glass breaker is less likely to be used in your camping multi-tool than a can opener.
What are you willing to pay for it?
If you have resources to invest in hiking and camping supplies, I think you have enough money to pay the price for the best camping multi-tool, even if you just want to use it for camping. However, spending only a good amount of money cannot guaranty you the best quality product.
Just see that if you go through the hassle of bringing multi-tool camping with you, you expect it to work when you need it to. You took a multi-tool with you to help you out, and you want to know that it won’t fall down when you’re trying to solve a problem. So, if you have the means, don’t skimp!
How do you travel to the camp, by car or on foot?
The kind of multi-tool that fits well for you depends on how you go camping. While you’re driving to the campsite in a Jeep, you actually don’t mind if your multi-tool is a couple of ounces heavier or doesn’t have a pocket clip. If your only mode of transportation to the campsite is your hiking boots, though, something unnecessary will irritate you.
Are you a doomsday survivor or a glamper?
Glampers (definition: anyone who loves luxurious or glamorous camping) love the great outdoors while having all of the conveniences of home. They’ll probably take their coffee bean grinder and foot massager camping.
On the other hand, the doomsday survivor would shave the bark off a dead tree for kindling and light it with a ferrocerium rod to prepare a one-course meal of bugs and leaves.
The survivalist would most likely prefer to go light and slim with just the basic necessities for survival at the campsite. At the same time, the glamper would be content to pack a multi-tool with any item imaginable just in case it comes in handy.
